This witch wore a black dress, the traditional pointed hat, and carried a broomstick on which she would ride through the night. From the witch frenzy of the 16th century to the pretty girls of Charmed, witches have certainly changed in the public eye. There is no costume choice with a richer history than the witch costume, and it has certainly come a long way over the years.

The evil cackle she would let out as she carried out her evil mischief has become a famous sound over the years. She was a wicked and decidedly ugly old woman, with green skin, a large hooked nose and of course a wart on the end.

This witch is by far the most dominant version when it comes to representing the Halloween season, but today the witch has certainly taken another turn entirely. Witches were once vie as evil hags who would cast spells on anyone who happened to look at them the wrong way. The earliest witch costumes follo in the tradition of the old school witch.
