The correct term for male/female pattern baldness is Androgenetic Alopecia and this is caused when testosterone combines with an enzyme in the scalp and creates DHT (dihydrotestosterone). Genetic hair loss as you will have already guessed is hereditary, however it was once thought to be just from the maternal genes, but in fact you can inherit it from either parent.
