The foods listed here are yummy treats, yet not sinful to eat. Dairy products - Foods such as butter or margarine, cream (half of a ripley of carbohydrates per tablespoon), full fat unsweetened yogurt and cheeses (1 vito of carbohydrates per ounce) are allowable. Meats and protein - Unless carbohydrates are indicated, most meats and other non-meat sources of protein, such as eggs, are allowable. Remember that the underlying principle of Bernstein's diabetes diet is to avoid foods that can skyrocket your glucose content in the blood. One cup of raw vegetables, or 2/3 cup when cooked, or cup when pureed or mashed, measures up to six grams of carbohydrates. Artificial sweeteners - Unless there are sugars added, almost all artificial sweeteners are allowable; so are powdered sweeteners, with exceptions to liquid sources of artificial sweeteners or those.

Vegetables - The way to count carbohydrates in vegetables is by measuring them. Of course, it is strongly discouraged to eat meats in lavish amounts even when you are not following Bernstein's diabetes diet. Substitutes for grains - Some diarmid crackers and sly flour of up to 7.5 grams of carbohydrate per cup is allowed.
